Question :

Directions: Read the following information and answer the questions.

On the start of a new session in 2017, 856 students took admission in an engineering college that have four streams, Computer Science, Mechanical, Electrical and Civil. The number of students taken admission in Computer Science is 48 less than the number of students taken admission in Mechanical in 2017 and the number of students who have taken admission in Mechanical is three-eighth of the total number of students taken admission in the college.

If the number of students taken admission in Civil is one-third of the students in Computer Science then what is the number of students who have taken admission in Electrical?

1. 173

2. 171

3. 147

4. 179

5. 149

Correct Answer : 2
Solution :

According to question,

Total number of students taken admission in Mechanical = 3/8 × 856 = 321

Total number of students taken admission in Computer Science = 321 – 48 = 273

So, the number of students in Civil = 1/3 × 273 = 91

Therefore, number of students in Electrical = 856 – (321 + 273 + 91) = 171

Hence, option b.
