As of August 2022, Tamil Nadu holds the record for the highest number of Ramsar Sites in India, with 14 wetlands designated under the Ramsar Convention. These sites include important ecological habitats like Pallikaranai Marsh, Pichavaram Mangroves, and Vembannur Wetland Complex.
This development came as part of India's efforts to conserve and sustainably manage its wetlands. During the celebration of 75 years of Independence (Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav), the government made a significant push to increase the number of internationally recognized Ramsar sites, taking the total number in the country to over 75 at that time.
Ramsar Sites are wetlands of international importance designated under the Ramsar Convention, an international treaty for the conservation and wise use of wetlands.
