The given question consists of two statements numbered I and II. You must decide whether the data provided in the statements are sufficient to answer the question:
There are six persons A, B, C, D, E, and F whose weight are in descending order, then what is the weight of E, if the median of weight of persons B, C, D and E is 63.5 kg.
I. The mean of weight of three persons B, C, and D is 65 kg and the mean of weight of two persons B and E is 63.
II. The median of weight of persons A, B and C is 68 kg and the mean of B, C, D, and E is 63.25 kg.
1.If the data in both statements I and II together are necessary to answer the question.
2.If the data in statement I alone is sufficient to answer the question, while the data in statement II alone is not sufficient to answer the question.
3.If the data either in statement I alone or in statement II alone is sufficient to answer the question.
4.If the data in statement II alone is sufficient to answer the question, while the data in statement I alone is not sufficient to answer the question.
5.If the data given in both statements I and II together are not sufficient to answer the question.
Correct Answer : 3
Solution :
The median of weight of persons B, C, D and E is 63.5 kg.
C + D = 127 kg --(1)
From I:
The mean of weight of three persons B, C, and D is 65 kg
=> B + C + D = 195
=> B = 195 - 127
=> B = 68 kg
and the mean of weight of two persons B and E is 63.
=> B + E = 126
=> E = 126 - 68 = 58 kg
Hence, statement I alone is sufficient
From II:
The median of weight of persons A, B and C is 68 kg
=> B = 68 kg
and the mean of B, C, D, and E is 63.25 kg.
=> B + C + D + E = 253
=> E = 253 - 68 - 127
=> E = 58 kg
Hence, statement II alone is sufficient
