The given question consists of two statements numbered I and II. You must decide whether the data provided in the statements are sufficient to answer the question:
If downstream speed of a boat is 35km/h, then find upstream speed of the boat.
Statement I: When the same boat covers 350km in downstream it takes 60 hours less when it covers the same distance in upstream.
Statement II: Ratio of speed of boat in still water to speed of stream is 4:3.
1.If the data in statement I alone is sufficient to answer the question, while the data in statement II alone is not sufficient to answer the question.
2.If the data in statement II alone is sufficient to answer the question, while the data in statement I alone is not sufficient to answer the question.
3.If the data either in statement I alone or in statement II alone is sufficient to answer the question.
4.If the data in both statement I and II together are necessary to answer the question.
5.If the data given in both statements I and II together are not sufficient to answer the question.
Correct Answer : 3
Solution :
Let speed of boat in still water and speed of stream be x km/h and y km/h respectively.
Statement I: 350/35 = 350/(x - y) - 60
(x - y) = upstream speed = 5 km/hour.
Statement I alone is sufficient to answer the question.
Statement II:
Speed of boat in still water = 4/7 * 35 = 20 km/hour
Speed of stream = 3/7 * 35 = 15 km/hour.
Statement II alone is sufficient to answer the question.
