On June 5, 2023, the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, flagged off India's first international cruise vessel, MV Empress, from Chennai to Sri Lanka. This marked a significant milestone in India's cruise tourism sector. The cruise, operated by Cordelia Cruises, offers itineraries that include stops at three Sri Lankan ports: Hambantota, Trincomalee, and Kankesanturai. The launch coincided with the inauguration of a new international cruise terminal at Chennai Port, developed at a cost of ₹17.21 crore, enhancing the infrastructure to support such international voyages.
