Question :

The question below consists of a question and two statements numbered I and II given below it. You must decide whether the data provided in the statements are sufficient to answer the question:

In a group of 5 friends A, B, C, D and E what will be the age of C after 4 years from present?

I: After 6 years from present, average age of persons A, B, C and D will be 21 years and present age of A is 3 years more than the present age of E.

II: After 3 years from present, average age of persons C, D and E will be 16 years while the average age of persons A and B before 2 years from present was 14 years.

1. I alone is sufficient.

2. II alone is sufficient.

3. Either I alone or II alone is sufficient.

4. Both I and II together are sufficient.

5. Both I and II together are not sufficient.

Correct Answer : 5
Solution :

Let present age of persons A, B, C, D and E is 'A', 'B', 'C', 'D' and 'E' respectively.

From I:

[(A + 6) + (B + 6) + (C + 6) + (D + 6)]/4 = 21

(A + B + C + D) + 24 = 84

(A + B + C + D) = 60 ........ (1)

A = E + 3 ........ (2)

Statement I alone is not sufficient.

From II:

[(C + 3) + (D + 3) + (E + 3)]/3 = 16

(C + D + E) + 9 = 48

(C + D + E) = 39 .......... (3)

[(A - 2) + (B - 2)]/2 = 14

(A + B) - 4 = 28

(A + B) = 32 ........ (4)

Statement II alone is not sufficient.

From I and II:

[(A + 6) + (B + 6) + (C + 6) + (D + 6)]/4 = 21

(A + B + C + D) + 24 = 84

(A + B + C + D) = 60 ........ (1)

A = E + 3 ........ (2)

[(C + 3) + (D + 3) + (E + 3)]/3 = 16

(C + D + E) + 9 = 48

(C + D + E) = 39 .......... (3)

[(A - 2) + (B - 2)]/2 = 14

(A + B) - 4 = 28

(A + B) = 32 ........ (4)

From (1) and (4)-

32 + (C + D) = 60

(C + D) = 28 ........ (5)

From (3) and (5)-

28 + E = 39

E = 11 .......... (6)

From (2) and (6)-

A = 11 + 3 = 14 years

We can't calculate the value of C.

Statement I and II together are not sufficient.
