Question :

The question below consists of a question and two statements numbered I and II given below it. You must decide whether the data provided in the statements are sufficient to answer the question:

(x + 20) kg of mixture A contains rice and Tea and another (x - 19) kg of mixture B contains Tea and Sugar. A shopkeeper mixes (9/20) of mixture A with mixture B. Find that after this operation amount of tea in the final mixture B is what per cent more than the amount of Sugar?

Statement I: Amount of Rice in mixture A was 50% more than the amount of Tea in that mixture. The amount of tea in mixture A is 15 kg more than the amount of tea in mixture B.

Statement II: The initial ratio of Tea and Sugar in the mixture B is 3: 4 and difference between amount of Rice and Sugar in the final mixture of B is 4.2 kg.

1. Only I is sufficient.

2. Only II is sufficient.

3. Either I or II alone is sufficient.

4. Both I and II together are sufficient.

5. Both I and II together are not sufficient.

Correct Answer : 4
Solution :

From I:

Ratio of Rice to Tea in mixture A = 150%: 100% = 3: 2

Amount of rice in mixture A = 3(x + 20)/5

Amount of tea in mixture A = 2(x + 20)/5

Since we are not given any information of mixture B.

Statement I alone is not sufficient.

From II:

Amount of tea in mixture B = 3(x - 19)/7

Amount of sugar in mixture B = 4(x - 19)/7

Since we are not given any information of mixture A.

Statement II alone is not sufficient.

From I and II:

From statement I we get:

Amount of rice in mixture A = 3(x + 20)/5

Amount of tea in mixture A = 2(x + 20)/5

From statement II we get:

Amount of tea in mixture B = 3(x - 19)/7

Amount of sugar in mixture B = 4(x - 19)/7

According to question-

[2(x + 20)/5] - [3(x - 19)/7] = 15

14x + 280 - 15x + 285 = 15 * 35

x + 525 = 565

x = 40

Amount of tea in the final mixture B = [3(x - 19)/7] + (9/20) * [2(x + 20)/5] = 9 + 10.8 = 19.8 kg

Amount of sugar in the final mixture B = 4(x - 19)/7 = 12 kg

Required per cent = [(19.8 - 12)/12] * 100 = 65%

Statements I and II together are sufficient.
