Question :

The time taken by a boat to cover 200 km upstream in 12.5 hours. If the speed of the stream is 2 km/h less than half the speed of a boat in still water, then find the time taken by the boat to cover 600 km downstream.

1. 12 hours

3. 15 hours

4. 20 hours

5. 16 hours

Correct Answer : 3
Solution :

Let the speed of the stream be y km/h

So, the speed of a boat in still water = 2y + 4 km/h [y = speed of boat in still water/2 - 2]

Speed of boat upstream = The speed of a boat in still water - The speed of the stream

= 2y + 4 - y

= y + 4 km/h

Speed = Distance/ Time

y + 4 = 200/12.5

y + 4 = 16

y = 12

Speed of boat downstream = The speed of a boat in still water + The speed of the stream = 2y + 4 + y

= 3y + 4

= 3 * 12 + 4

= 40 km/h

Hence, the required time = 600/40 = 15 hours
