Eminent scholar and author Daji Panshika passes away

Eminent scholar and author Daji Panshikar, known for his deep knowledge of Indian epics and contributions to Marathi literature, passed away at his residence in Maharashtra’s Thane following a brief illness. He was 92. Panshikar was widely respected for his scholarly interpretations of texts like the Mahabharata, Eknaathi Bhagwat, and Bhavarth Ramayan.

India's foreign exchange reserves stood at $691.5 billion as of May 30, down $1.2 billion from the previous week and coming off near-eight-month highs, announced Reserve Bank of India. The country's reserves are now about $13.4 billion below their all-time high hit in September 2024.

RBI eases norms for NBFC-MFIs; cuts qualifying asset threshold to 60%

The RBI has reduced the qualifying asset threshold to 60% (net of intangible assets) from 75% of total assets for NBFC-MFIs (non-banking finance company – microfinance institutions), allowing them to diversify their asset base. The qualifying assets of NBFC-MFIs should constitute a minimum of 60 per cent of the total assets (netted off by intangible assets).

RBI relaxes final guidelines on gold loans

In view of the feedback received after public consultations, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has relaxed certain aspects of the earlier draft guidelines on gold loans in the final norms. The regulator said lenders must now maintain 85 per cent loan-to-value (LTV) ratio for consumption related gold loans below Rs 2.5 lakh, as against the earlier proposed 75 per cent.

For consumption loans backed by gold as collateral with Rs 2.5 lakh-Rs 5 lakh ticket size, the LTV ratio has been mandated at 80 per cent, while for loans above Rs 5 lakh, the LTV ratio has been maintained at 75 per cent. The prescribed LTV ratio shall be maintained on an ongoing basis throughout the tenor of the loan, the RBI said.

Lenders may renew an existing loan or sanction a top-up loan upon a formal request from the borrower and subject to a credit assessment, within the permissible LTV, and provided the loan is classified as standard. The test has been developed to evaluate the foundational literacy and numeracy skills of registered non-literate learners. The FLNAT process was rolled out in phases between July 2024 and March 2025, with over 1.77 crore adult learners tested. By May 2025, only 34.31 lakh were officially certified, reflecting a national certification average of about 19.4 pc.

The data compiled and declared by the National Institute of Open Schooling offers insight into how states differ in tackling adult education and literacy challenges. Tamil Nadu recorded a 100 per cent success rate, certifying all 5,09,694 learners who appeared for FLNAT. Tripura closely followed, certifying 13,909 of 14,179 learners, a 98.1 pc success rate.
