India marked a major milestone on the global skills stage as the country concluded its debut participation at the WorldSkills Asia Competition (WSAC) 2025 with an impressive 8th-place finish, among 29 participating nations.

Messaging services including WhatsApp, Telegram and Arattai will now be available only when they are constantly linked to a SIM card.

Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has issued an order directing messaging apps to ensure that the device providing the app services to users is paired with a SIM card.

This is being done to prevent fraud and hijacking of messaging accounts.

According the DoT directed companies to ensure that the apps are continuously linked to the SIM card installed in the device, “making it impossible to use the app without that specific, active SIM.”

Further, companies have to ensure that the web versions of the apps, if provided, are logged out periodically with the option to re-link no later than six hours, using a QR code. These compliances have to be carried out within 90 days of issuance of these instructions.

Aside from this, platforms also have to submit compliance reports to the DoT within 120 days from issuance of the directions. Failure to comply will result in action under the Telecommunications Act, 2023, the Telecom Cyber Security Rules, 2024 (as amended), and other applicable laws.
